A common concern for our patients is that they will feel a great amount of pain when they have a consultation with their dentist. This has made many people avoid going to the dentist altogether and not get their teeth examined. Sunshine Dental Group understands that a visit to the dentist may be daunting, but don’t let that prevent you from receiving the treatment that you require.

Doing this would be very risky for your oral health, as not having regular check-ups is bound to result in dental issues arising and not getting treated before it is too late. Although we take all the proper measures to prevent our patients from feeling pain, some procedures are more intensive than others, which can make patients very worried.

This is why Sunshine Dental Group recommends safe and secure sleep dentistry to our more nervous patients. Rather than fidgeting and panicking throughout the procedure, the patient would probably much prefer to be asleep while their teeth are being operated on. This will also make it easier for your dentist to be able to help you by examining your teeth.

What does Sleep Dentistry Entail

When sleep dentistry via IV sedation is requested, your dentist will use a mild dose of general anaesthetic to sedate you, although patients will still be conscious and be able to breathe on their own. However, IV sedation is only available for minor procedures, such as minor extractions, fillings, and general orthodontic treatment.

For appointments of a more complex nature, we will be using a general anaesthetic that will be administered by our specialist anaesthetist who will monitor the patient throughout the procedure and will wake them up afterwards. This allows for most dental procedures to be performed to a higher standard.

Patients undergoing this form of sleep dentistry will be unconscious throughout the procedure being unaware of what is happening around them. You will not experience any of the sounds, sights, smells, tastes, and use of tools, such as drills, needles, and other instruments. This means you will not have any memory of the event, meaning you have nothing to worry about. Sunshine Dental Group state that a consultation is required to determine whether treatment is possible under these conditions.

On the plus side, being unconscious will also eliminate the sense of boredom that patients may experience during long or complex sessions. This will be useful for our cosmetic dental care treatments, as they can take a while to complete.
